Discovery Time

On Friday after morning tea we have Discovery Time for an hour.
We join up with Room 6 and Room 9.
We start each session with Mat time. The leading teacher will read a story that is linked to our Key Competencies. There are 5 Key Competencies that we focus on...
1) Relating to Others
2) Managing Self
3) Using Language- Symbols, signs and text
4) Thinking
5) Participating and Contributing

The children are using these all the time. We look especially for children who are showing how they can use these Key Competencies during Discovery Time. We also encourage the children to tell us if they notice someone who is using these.

We set up lots of different activities for the children to choose during Discovery Time. This is a time when the children can choose what they would like to do.

We love watching how they interact with each other, meet children and work with teachers from other classes, solve problems, discover new skills and ways of playing.

Some of the activities we can choose from are:
The Sandpit
Art/ Making and creating table
Playdough
Blocks, lego, toy cars and car mat.
Dress ups and playhouse
Fundamental Movement Skills equipment such as small and large balls, skipping, balancing, jumping, leaping
Jump Jam
Musical Instruments
Giant Chalk

Sometimes we organise a "Wheels Day" where the children can bring their scooter, bike and skateboard to school for Discovery Time.

When it is a gorgeous Wainui Beach Day, we may even decide to have Discovery down on our beach.

We all work together to pack up at the end. We love sharing what we have done!
