Little Boat

We are working on reading with fluency and expression!  We are also learning to be resilient like a little boat sailing through storms and sea monsters to reach happy places.  We know how to be brave, be confident and never give up.  We hope you enjoy listening to our story!

Our Sail Away Calendar Art

Room 9 have created these beautiful pieces of art. As a school, we do a calendar art fundraiser each year. There are many different products that you will be able to order. Each will be printed with the image of your child’s art piece. These make great Christmas presents for whanau as they can be easily posted. Great if your relatives live far away.

We used different techniques and materials to create our pictures. The first step was to create our skies. We dyed our background and then sprinkled salt on the wet dye to add a cloud like effect.

To make the waves, we sponge painted our paper in different shades of purple, blue and green. Once dry, we ripped this paper into strips and glued it onto our piece. The white paper tear gives the effect of the wave caps. The next step was to make and decorate our sails, then position them above the boats and glue them into position.

More Fab Poem Books

We have been focussing on Fridays on producing quality artwork to go with our poems.  Look at these stunning 3D butterflies the tamariki did on Friday. While colouring we are practising correct pencil grip and building stronger finger and hand muscles for writing. We are getting really good at completely filling spaces with colour, selecting colours that work well together, blending and shading, cutting and glueing.  We LOVE the pride the kids are taking in their work! Ka pai Room 9!

Learning Through Play

Check out Liukou and Julien's creativity today in our Learning Through Play!  They were very proud of the racetrack that they had made out of blocks.  They spent quite a while connecting all the parts creating it and when it got a little busted during our pack up time before I had a chance to take a photo they showed great resilience by simply fixing it up again and putting things right!  Great work boys! You are learning to work together, use problem solving skills and your imagination!

A Special Visitor

Well, this is what we LOVE about our school...the ability to down tools at a moments notice to stroll across to the beach to watch a very special visitor...a Southern Right Whale!!  The whale wowed us with water spouts and spent a long time lolling about just behind the breakers.  We got a great look at the whale as it lifted it's fin, head and tail out of the water.  Just magical!  What a way to learn!!  Thanks to Liz Proctor for the photos :)

Laurel Burch Cats

We have been working hard to produce some quality artwork to go with our poems each Friday.
This week, we had a poem about pets and then we looked at Laurel Burch's colourful artwork.
We drew careful shapes and got creative with colour to create our own Laurel Burch cats!
All of our cats looked stunning!

Look at the quality work that Ruby, Liukou, Sophie and Eleanor completed!

Oranges, Oranges and More Oranges!!

Today Koka Janna brought in some delicious oranges in for our Language Experience session. We cut them into segments. We used our senses to describe and discuss our ideas about the oranges as we ate them.  We used these ideas to write our stories.  Check out our cheeky toothy grins!!!

Astronaut Ice cream

Waylon has just come back from America. He was very excited to share some of his adventures with us. He talked to us about this Astronaut Ice cream that he had brought back.
Alexei and Emma look at the packets of Astronaut Ice cream.
We couldn't imagine what it was going to look like.
Waylon shows us the packet.
We opened it and had a look and a taste.
We also looked at some ordinary vanilla ice cream.
We all had great ideas to describe how they are different.
Koka Jodie helps us sound out and write some harder words that we may need for our writing.
These are our "looking words". We know where to find them as we are writing.
We could hear and find most of the sounds needed to write the word... astronaut

New Life for the Medicinal Area

On Friday, we made the most of the sunshine and planted some new plants in the Maori Medicinal Garden. We found cosy, sheltered spots for the young trees and popped them into their new homes with lots of care.
We are looking forward to watching our new Kawakawa,
Koromiko and Hebe Tairawhiti grow big and strong.

The ABC Alliteration Book by Moana 3 Year 5 and 6 students

Moving the Mulch Mountain

Well...they say "many hands, make light work"...and it's true!  What was a mountain of mulch at the beginning of last week has now been reduced to a bit of a pile and it's all down to the collective hard work of Room 5 and Room 9 who worked hard on Action Stations Day and used their buddy time on Friday to shift more of the garden goodness into the medicinal garden.

Happy Faces in our Learning Through Play

We love our Learning Through Play sessions in Room 9!
Look at these happy faces creating play spaces in the Whanau corner and imagining, building, and playing with the Duplo.  Good on you Room 9!  We can't wait to see what you can come up with next!

More Poem Art Works

We have been working hard on Fridays producing artwork to go with our poems.  Last week we were thinking about patterning and pressing hard or lightly with the crayons to make outlines and shade areas.  Look at Alexei's hard work! She even added a border.  We created a gallery of all our pictures so everyone in Room 9 could see all the wonderful ideas.  Great job Room 9!

Poem Book Pictures

Look at Waylon's beautiful artwork he created in his poem book on Friday.
We are aiming to make our poem books, books that we can treasure and read from for a long time by adding quality pictures each time we add a new poem.

Matariki Constellation Art

We created our own art work based around the Matariki constellation which is in view at the moment and is the signal for the Maori New Year. The children loved creating their constellations.
We would love you to leave some comments here, that we can share with Room 9 about their work.

Room 9 Dresses Up!

What a fun day we had on Friday.  We had some wonderful costumes and lots of big smiles!  Thank you for helping to raise money for the children's ward at the hospital!

We think we were the best dressed class at school!  What do you think?
